As a Tutoring Plus volunteer tutor/mentor, you will work one-on-one with the same student (or with the same small group of students) each week for the duration of the program. We ask our volunteers to commit to one session a week.
Step 1: The application process
Submit a volunteer application and contact us with any questions. Once we review your application, we will contact you to schedule an interview with Tutoring Plus staff.
Step 2: Orientation and training
Before you begin, you will participate in a 90-minute orientation session. During the orientation you will learn more about Tutoring Plus’ approach to engaging youth and a typical evening working with students.
Additional trainings will be offered throughout the school year, providing you with the tools and techniques to be an effective volunteer.
Step 3: T+ matching process
Because the quality of the relationship you build with youth is key to their success, we carefully match you before your service begins. We’ll provide you with background information on your match prior to the first session so you’ll have a good understanding of academic challenges, learning style, and personality before you meet.
Most youth who attend Tutoring Plus live in the Port neighborhood of Cambridge, which lies between Kendall and Central Squares. We provide one-on-one programs to youth in grades 4 – 12 and enrichment programs to students in grades 4 – 8.
Step 4: Ongoing support for your match
T+ staff works closely with you to support you and your match. Communication between you, site staff and the Communications and Outreach Manager provides you with guidance and support. Monthly volunteer newsletters also keep you updated with volunteer tips, happenings, and success stories.
Volunteer voices are important to our organization. As a volunteer, you provide us with feedback during trainings and volunteer reflection sessions. Tutoring Plus also has a Volunteer Advisory Committee that works to support the Tutoring Plus volunteer community. T+ schedules “Volunteer Only Nights” in which you have a chance to meet other volunteers socially and network.
Contact Kimm Topping, Communications and Outreach Manager, firstname.lastname@example.org with any additional questions.
