Volunteer Appreciation Night 2016

On June 15, 2016, Tutoring Plus hosted our Annual Volunteer Appreciation Night to celebrate the incredible commitment and passion of our volunteer tutors/mentors. Almost 200 volunteers served at T+ this year!

We honored their work at The Rising in Inman Square. Thank you to The Rising for your generous donations to our organization and volunteers!

Each year, we present four awards in recognition of outstanding volunteers: Rookie of the Year Award, Dale Troppito Unsung Hero Award, Louis Menand III Volunteer Appreciation Award, and Unwavering Service Award.

The Rookie of the Year Award was presented to volunteers who stood out not only among new volunteers, but among all volunteers at their tutoring site.

This year, we recognized: Julie Perlman, Lucas Smith, and Dana DiMartinis.

The Dale Troppito Unsung Hero Award recognizes volunteers whose dedication to their students and/or Tutoring Plus is unparalleled. Beginning in 2015, this award has been named in honor of Dale Troppito. Dale and her husband Tony were volunteer tutors at our Jefferson Park high school site from fall 2012 – spring 2014. In the midst of tutoring, Dale was diagnosed with colon cancer. Throughout her battle, she continued tutoring as much as she was able, always showing up with amazing energy and commitment to her student. Dale lost her battle in March of 2015, and through this award we honor her legacy.

Tony Troppito, Dale’s husband, presented this award to Tina Lagerstedt, Chris Yasso, Michael Perlstein, Malcolm Pittman, and Jess Clark in honor of Dale’s enduring spirit.

The Louis Menand III Volunteer Appreciation Award honors the commitment and work of outstanding volunteers. This award is named in honor of Louis Menand III (1923-2008), a former MIT assistant provost and professor. His passion was teaching and challenging those around him to examine their actions and the impact of those actions on their communities and the world. Louis’ leadership helped to shape Tutoring Plus for over 20 years. His belief in the power of education, the importance of giving back to your community, and equality and fairness for all continues to live on in our programs and volunteers.

This year, we recognized Bill Mason, Jeff Hyde, and Amanda Woo.

The Unwavering Service Award is presented to volunteers who have served with T+ for three or more years:

3 years: Carol Gatlin, Elsa Goldstein, Eric Gregory, Nare Janvelyan, Adhiti Kannan, Shelby Majure, Sam Norman-Haignere, Ashwin Thangali, Ben Umiker, and Kristia Wantchekon

4 years: Jason Conroy, Mina Kojima, Else Vedula, and Katherine Wu

5 years or more: Solomon Adera, Diane Carson, Elizabeth Hodge, Tina Lagerstedt, Jessica Clark, Timothy Hennekey, Bobbi Lemay, Bill Mason, and Malcolm Pittman

Thank you so much to our volunteers for your dedication, thoughtfulness, and generous commitment to Tutoring Plus. We appreciate all that you do for our community!
