Amelia Peabody Foundation Issues $20,000 Challenge Grant

Local education nonprofit Tutoring Plus must raise funds by December 1

(Cambridge, MA) — Tutoring Plus of Cambridge has been challenged to raise $20,000 by December 1, 2019, in order to receive a matching $20,000 from the Amelia Peabody Foundation. Local nonprofit Tutoring Plus has been a fixture within the Cambridge community for over 55 years, providing free tutoring and mentoring programs to nearly 200 students each year. Funds raised will help to support existing program sites and address the current waitlist.

“The Amelia Peabody Foundation has been a long-standing supporter of Tutoring Plus. With their continued support, we grow as an organization as we think more creatively about our community outreach, fundraising and organizational sustainability,” said Kathryn Fenneman, Executive Director.

To date, Tutoring Plus has already raised over $9,000 thanks to contributions from individual donors, locally-based corporations and a charity soccer tournament. ‘We are grateful to the Amelia Peabody Foundation for their continued support and are happy with our progress so far, but we definitely need help from our community to reach this year’s goal,” said Board Vice President Ken Field.

All funds raised will support the organization’s 1:1 tutoring and mentoring programs, where students are matched with a volunteer who provides weekly homework support and mentoring. Students also engage with a social emotional learning curriculum that focuses on developing skills like emotional management and teamwork. Funding will also help to eliminate the waitlist at the organization’s newest site in North Cambridge, reaching even more students within the community.

“We know that the families we work with care deeply about their children, their education and their future – no different from any other family. We also know that we live in a world where opportunity is all too often dictated by the amount of money your family has. By offering free, high quality and accessible programming, we create places where all young people feel safe, affirmed and supported,” said Fenneman.
